Description

The ONA Coffee Foundation Barista Course is designed to open your eyes to the world of coffee.

We will equip you with the technical skills to competently operate an espresso machine. The variables are endless, however, there are three main areas to focus on that can make or break a coffee from cup to cup; Extractions, Milk Stretching & Pouring. By the end of this course, you will have a greater understanding of the correct way to perform these skills.

This course is jam packed, but it sets the foundation for accelerated learning in becoming an expert barista.

The Beginner Course is perfect for the home or (soon to be) professional barista, as well as anyone with no or limited experience with coffee.

Outline:

  • Green-bean journey comparing Arabica vs Robusta, Washed vs Dry Process & the journey taken prior to the café
  • Introduction to the machine and grinder, safety warnings & how to achieve consistency with manual grinding & free-pouring shots
  • Analysing the correct espresso volume, time, dose, aroma, taste & colour
  • Correct dosing, distribution & tamping
  • Fundamentals of ristretto vs espresso & extractions needed for all your café beverages
  • Break down our two-stage approach of how to achieve silky milk
  • Learn how to free-pour all your coffees to get the correct depths of foam & ideal ‘canvas’.
  • Daily & weekly maintenance needed to maintain ideal machine performance

All classes are limited to 4 participants & you will receive a Certificate of Achievement at the completion of the class.

Additional Needs:

We will happily cater for vegans & milk-based allergies. Please leave a comment when you book your course if you require almond or soy milk & feel welcome to bring your own preferred milk substitute.

International students - our courses are performed in English. We can make arrangements if you need to bring an interpreter with you. Please let us know how we can assist you.


When you Arrive:

Please make yourself comfortable in the cafe at least 5 minutes before the session and let members of staff know you are there for coffee training. The trainer will come and meet you in the cafe.

All ONA Coffee trainers are highly experienced in producing top quality coffee and are running courses designed Hugh Kelly, Australian Barista Champion 2016 and 2017.

Parking Info

All SYDNEY based Barista Courses are held in our new Barista Training Facility at ONA Marrickville 140 Marrickville Road, Marrickville NSW 2204. Please arrive five minutes prior to your scheduled class time.

Casual and closed shoes.

Appropriate for

If you have never used an espresso machine and grinder, home baristas, or if you are unsure on fundamental espresso and milk techniques.

As a home barista, this class was exactly what I needed to fill in my knowledge gaps. It has helped me to improve both my espresso and milk texturing. Jay was patient, and provided the right advice when needed. If you're a home barista or interested in making espresso, I highly recommend his course.

The course was exactly what I needed to help in making more consistent coffees at home. Having an experienced barista be able to show me exactly how to do certain aspects of stretching milk, pouring and extraction has helped me massively. Must do for any coffee lover!

This is exactly what I needed in my coffee making journey. Having bought a decent espresso machine at home and not being able to consistently pull a great shot, I literally spent the past year tearing my hair out, watching YouTube tutorials, reading article and tips... but nothing worked. A couple of hours in this training and it's completely upped my coffee game. I know how to create a coffee recipe for a consistent espresso shot... And most importantly, it wasn't just theoretical, we did it all on my machine.
